A failing pool pump usually gives warning before it quits: air bubbles in the pump basket, a new grinding or screeching noise, weaker flow at the returns, water leaking around the housing, or a motor that keeps shutting off and restarting. Catching one of these early is the difference between a small repair and replacing the pump outright.
1. Air bubbles in the pump basket
A pump basket full of air means the pump is pulling in air somewhere on the suction side, often at the pump lid o-ring or a loose fitting. A pump that can't hold prime runs dry, and running dry overheats the seal, which turns a cheap fix into a bigger one.
2. Grinding or screeching noise
A healthy pump hums steadily. Screeching or grinding usually points to worn motor bearings, and a loud hum with no water movement often means the impeller is jammed or the start capacitor has failed. None of these get better on their own.
3. Weak flow at the returns
If the jets feel weaker than usual, check the obvious first: full skimmer and pump baskets, or a filter overdue for cleaning. If those are clear and the flow is still weak, the impeller may be clogged or worn, and that's an inside-the-pump job.
4. Water leaking around the pump
A puddle under the pump usually means the shaft seal is going. It looks harmless, but the leak sits right where water meets the motor, and a failed seal lets water reach parts that were never meant to get wet.
5. It keeps shutting off and restarting
A motor that trips the breaker or cuts out after a few minutes is overheating or has an electrical fault. Short cycling stresses the motor every time it restarts, so the problem compounds while it waits.
